Sandplay Therapy

Unlike any other form of play therapy, Sandplay Therapy uses the kinaesthetic and sensory experience of sand to create a story of the challenge one is facing. The use of touch like that from sand, allows for the activation of memories that may not be available to us with words.

Sandplay Therapy is a psychotherapeutic approach that is appropriate for individuals of all ages, children and adults using a specifically designed sandtray of specific dimensions. The three dimensional nature of Sandplay Therapy allows the client to reorganize and shift the sand story to better fit their inner world. Sandplay Therapy uses the power of images and words to create an experience that allows for the whole brain and body’s healing process to begin.

There are no rules in how one creates their sand story, for it is their own to tell and interpret in their own way. Individuals are able to use figurines, miniatures and other items to be placed in the sand. A sandtray is painted blue on the inside of the tray to represent the sky and the water elements in nature. It can also be used both wet and dry, creating a landscape to portray both the internal and the external experience of their present moment or stuck place. When an event in ones life has deeply impacted them, interrupting typical development, Sandplay Therapy can allow for the subconscious to be raised to a more conscious level of awareness.

The nonthreatening nature of Sandplay Therapy allows for the client to step back from their pain or discomfort to freely explore in a manner that can be more manageable to make sense of and to integrate. It is a free and protected space where the therapist holds an attitude of authentic curiosity, compassion and unconditional regard for the client. Insights, emotions and creative solutions are unlocked and healing occurs. This is where abilities to: resolve conflict, reorganize barriers, gain self-acceptance, build trust and belief in oneself can Flourish!

Neuroscience has now shown that when there are non-verbal communication skills available, a hands on experience like that with sand, can activate emotions, feelings of early trauma or distressing experiences. Sandplay therapy allows for the hands to work with the sand and to provide an emotionally rich right brain experience to communicate with the left part of the brain responsible for how we organize and link these experiences together.

Finding a balance and flow with our mind, body, and somatic experience can be freeing to allow for greater growth and development. Bettering connections not just with one’s self, but with those around us, broadening our sense of connection with the world around us.
